Facebook SCORING!…EdgeRank…that is.
News Feed Optimaization
NFO is Facebooks SEO. This is the term used to find out how your page is ranking within Facebook on your Like Pages.
Once upon a time, we had to have 10,000 fans before we could receive these Impressions…how many views… and feedback stats.
You will have noticed, you can receive many more views than your current fan count.This is where viral comes into play. If one fan likes your post, then some of their friends view it as well. Very powerful stuff!
It’s a great way to see what kind of an impact you’re having with your social marketing.
If you are serious about marketing on social platforms like Facebook, then getting a bit savvy on the subject will only help you focus your efforts on what’s working.
I know…looks like something our beloved Einstein wrote up for
Mark Zuckerberg.
This is the EdgeRank formula created by a crazy person at the Facebook office… Not very helpful at first glance but it actually will assist us in figuring out what has the most value in our posts…probably.
E= IS FOR EDGE
Just to confuse you more, the posts that you make on your page, be it a statis update, a video, or a picture is called an object.
When you post an object (One) and receive comments back on it, this is your Edge.
Ranking your Edge:
U= IS FOR AFFINITY
Why a U is being used for Affinity is another mind boggler, but there it is. Affinity has to do with your relationship to the people you are posting to, i.e., your friends.
All friends are not created equal. Facebook knows who you have the greatest relationships with, the ones that engage with you the most, and these friends will have the highest affinity score with you. Your updates Do Not go to all of your friends. Rude…huh?
Facebook chooses form these stats whom will view your post. If Mary Poppins loves videos… Facebook will make sure she gets to view yours.
Facebook will send out your updates to those they feel you have the most Affinity with. The more feedback, comments, you receive on your Edge from these high ranking relationships, the higher your score.
Remember: The higher your score, the more your posts will appear on your friends Facebook News Feeds.
W= IS FOR WEIGHT
We’ve got to keep our pages Fat with consistent actions. The more we comment, display videos, and set pictures, the greater our weight will be and up goes the score. Tagging friends is also a great boost to your score. (Facebook loves fatties…Thank the God’s!)
Facebook knows which of our friends likes photos and/ or videos (photos ranking highest in feedback stats) and will post these key things to them in hopes of creating more interaction on the pages. (Kinda Creepy…These Little FB Spies!)
Only Tag real friends! Tagging strangers is pretty cheeky and the FB knows you have no Affinity with them, so use discretion.
The only times I have tagged someone I’ve had a low Affinity score with was when I wrote something about them or put a link of theirs on my blog. I saw this more as a compliment to them and therefor I took the risk.
Be Mindful when posting. If you’re posting crap on your pages just to get ranking, then you will lose all credibility and Un-friending is close at hand.
D= IS FOR TIME DECAY
This applies to how old our post is and how long its taken to get recognition. The longer its been on the page the more it decreases in point value. They can, however, be resurrected with an onset of comments from friends of a high Affinity relationship to you.
You can optimize your posts by being aware of the Time Spikes on Facebook.
Using the EST frame for our timeline, the statistics of the best times to make your appearances are:
11am…This hour has the highest percentage (40%) of effective engagement, meaning, more people are willing to comment, share, and like your object. This is a quality time, the perfect hour for blog posts, event announcements, and big shout outs to others.
3pm…This hour has the highest number of friends online. This time is perfect for commenting on friends posts and making new ones by engaging in fresh conversations. People are a bit more at ease and easier to entreat.
Think of this hour as offering a cup of coffee to a buddy, using humor and non-intense conversation to get people to have some fun before they finish up there work day.
9pm…If you are at all like me, this is the time to check back on all the activities of your morning and afternoon posts and pop back in on posts from friends. It is very important to thank friends for their feedback and to answer your PM box.
This hour is tricky…some folks are winding down and feeling casual, while others have got their ‘ mojo on’ and want to wrap things up or create a movement. It is best to go with the flow and not get caught up in something you really don’t want for the sake of getting in on the discussion.
If you want to work it like a crazy person:
The optimal time within each of these hours is from on the hour to a quarter after.
The second best is half past the hour to a quarter till.
And Wednesday at 3pm EST is the top performance time for Facebook.
(I have no idea why this is, and I’m not the kind of machine that could stick to such structures. But hey, this could be fun to test drive.)
*Adjust your clock to Facebook time…that is: EST…‘world-clock’ your time zone to synchronize your efforts.*
RANK IT IN!
The higher you rank, the more views you will receive!
Facebook loves ENGAGEMENT…Inerracting with people is what is wanted here. It is the HEART of social networking.
RE-MINDER:
Facebook is an amazing place to create friendships and potential business partners. People are very keen in knowing whose authentic and on the up and up. This is a place for interaction and building relationships of trust and respect.
